ClimateHealth Academy

The ClimateHealth Academy is an innovative five-year digital training initiative designed to strengthen the technical, institutional, and operational capacities of young people across Africa, empowering them to understand, anticipate, and respond to climate-related health risks.

The Challenge: An Escalating Health Crisis

The urgency of the climate-health crisis in Africa is undeniable. Analysis of public health events recorded in the African region between 2001 and 2021 reveals that a staggering 56% of these events were directly linked to climate change . This vulnerability is compounded by the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, which have impacted approximately 19 million people and resulted in over 4,000 fatalities across the continent since the beginning of 2022 .

Climate change is not a distant threat; it is the single greatest driver of health vulnerability in Africa today. The Academy responds to this urgent need by offering structured learning pathways that promote climate-resilient health systems, innovative adaptation approaches, and strengthened multisectoral collaboration.

The Solution: A Continental Resource Centre

The ClimateHealth Academy is positioned as both a learning hub and a continental resource centre. It provides curated courses, technical modules, simulation exercises, and applied case studies tailored to the diverse climatic and socio-economic environments of Africa. Through rigorous content grounded in research and contextualized for African realities, the Academy is building the competencies of current and future leaders in the climate-health nexus.

The Academy aims to train over 10,000 youth by 2031, building a critical mass of experts capable of tackling the continent’s most pressing climate-health challenges. This includes:

Climate-Sensitive Health VulnerabilityUrgency and Impact
Vector-borne DiseasesWarming temperatures and changes in precipitation are accelerating the spread of diseases like malaria and dengue, with over 80% of the global population already at risk of a vector-borne disease .
Mental HealthClimate-induced uncertainty, resource loss, and displacement exacerbate the youth mental health crisis. The treatment gap for mental health conditions among young people in sub-Saharan Africa is as high as 80-90% , a vulnerability compounded by climate change .
Waterborne DiseasesIncreased flooding and drought compromise water safety and sanitation, leading to outbreaks.
Food and Nutrition InsecurityClimate variability impacts agricultural yields, threatening the nutritional status of millions of young Africans.

Proven Impact: Early Implementation Success

The Academy has already demonstrated its effectiveness through successful pilot programs
